The NCIOM has conducted a number of Task Forces studying the North Carolina mental health, developmental disabilities, and substance abuse systems. In some circles, these three systems of care are classified under the broad term "behavioral health."

Transitions for Persons with Developmental Disabiltiies

The North Carolina General Assembly asked the NCIOM to convene a task force to study three types of life settings transitions for persons with developmental disabilites, including: (i) transitions for adolescents with developmental disabilities leaving high school, including adolescents in foster care and those in other settings; (ii) transitions for persons with developmental disabilities who live with aging parents; and (iii) transitions for people with developmental disabilities who move from developmental centers to other settings. Dr. Jim Bodfish, Adonis Brown, and Leza Wainwright served as co-chairs of the study group, which published its final report in May 2009.

The North Carolina General Assembly asked the NCIOM to convene a task force to study substance abuse services in the state. The Task Force was co-chaired by Dr. Dwayne Book, Rep. Verla Insko, and Sen. Martin Nesbitt and submitted its Final Report in January 2009.
