Projects
The work of the NC IOM takes place principally through a "task
force" format. The NC IOM task forces have been
successful in facilitating groups of diverse state and local
health policy makers, health professionals, and business and
community leaders as they tackle complex health issues facing
the state.
These task forces, often including as many as 50 members, effectively
convene relevant experts from diverse backgrounds, steering
the effort to reach consensus about the major health issues
facing the state, and exploring various public and private initiatives
that will address these problems.
From these discussions emerges a blueprint that will guide
future public and private initiatives by describing the positive
and negative aspects of several known policy options pertinent
to a given problem or issue. The resulting blueprint is disseminated
to state legislators, county commissioners, health trade associations,
social services, health professionals, and business and community-leaders,
among others.
The NC IOM staff have ongoing
responsibility for helping disseminate the results of a task
force long after its report is published. Approximately
one year after the publication of a task force report, the NC
IOM organizes a full-day review of progress toward the
specific task force recommendations, and will hold future meetings
if needed.
