More information on these data
There are three different uninsured percentages included in the chart.
- CPS uninsured is the percent of non-elderly uninsured as presented in the HIA-6 (Health Insurance Coverage Status and Type of Coverage by State–Persons Under 65: 1999 to 2007) Historical Health Insurance Table published by the U.S. Census Bureau.
- Modeled uninsured is the uninsurance rate as predicted by the model outlined in the Updating Uninsured Estimates for Current Economic Conditions: State Specific Estimates report.
- Bayesian uninsured is an average of the two uninsured rates with weights determined by standard errors of the two estimates.
For all three rates, values for 2008 and 2009 are the “Modeled uninsured” rates (projected based on unemployment rates and other variabels in the model). (2009 projections are based on January 2009 unemployment levels.) Because of the changed health insurance environment in Massachusetts, projections for Massachusetts for 2008 and 2009 are not included.
Each bubble represents a state. The percent uninsured in each state can be tracked over time as a function of the unemployment rate. Bubble sizes are proportional to the state population under the age of 65; default bubble colors are based on the state’s geographic division as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau.
