Scott O'Brien manages the production schedule and daily operations of and supervises manuscript editing for the North Carolina Medical Journal. Before joining the North Carolina Institute of Medicine, he worked at The University of Chicago Press as a senior manuscript editor for journals sponsored by the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America.

O'Brien earned a master of public health degree from The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2010, completing a capstone that addressed policy issues associated with vaccination of males against human papillomavirus infection. He also holds a master of arts degree in philosophy from the University of Wyoming, a bachelor of science degree in biology from Creighton University, and a certificate in medical editing and writing from The University of Chicago Graham School of General Studies. He completed internships with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the AIDS Foundation of Chicago, and his editorial proficiency is recognized by the Board of Editors in the Life Sciences.
